Shopee Code League returns in 2021 as it continues its quest to nurture tech talents and upskill workforces by gathering like-minded communities for an intense competition of problem solving and knowledge sharing in the world of coding.
This effort answers the need for tech talent after the 2021 Market Outlook by Randstad reported that the global economy will require 149 million new tech roles by 2025 as businesses shift online.
To further promote international collaboration and exchange, Shopee Code League this year will feature a bigger talent pool as coders from China will be joining participants from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Taiwan. Last year, Shopee Code League attracted an astounding participation of over 21,000 coders.
Shopee Code League, the largest code-from-home League in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, is taking place from 6 to 20 March 2021, and will see teams of 2 to 4 people competing in three virtual competitions across data science, data analytics, and algorithms.
The Shopee Code League continues to garner the support of local governments and public organisations across the region including the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), with the common goal of advancing the digital economy.
Ian Ho, Regional Managing Director of Shopee said, “Shopee Code League was conceptualised with the aim to develop a workforce which will be ready for the future economy. With this in mind, the League will facilitate the exchange, learning, and development of new skills. This is needed to meet the increase in interest and demand as Malaysia continues to accelerate the digital transformation agenda. In 2020, we saw around 3,000 Malaysian participants with one team making it to the top 10. We hope more will take part this year to learn from like-minded talents from other countries.”

Surina Shukri, Chief Executive Officer of MDEC added, “Tech talent development has always been one of our pillars at MDEC as we continue to lead Malaysia’s digital economy forward. Our goal is to have the youth drive digital innovation for all and, to achieve that, we must equip them with the right tools and skill sets as well as provide them with access to the digital platforms and solutions. In doing so, these young coders will learn new skills and abilities that can meet the
current demands of the digital era. Undoubtedly, the Shopee Code League is an event that should not be missed for undergraduates and those choosing to upskill their talents for the future.”
The League has two categories – Open and Student – where the top ranked team in each category will win SGD3,000 (around RM9,120) and a chance for a full-time or internship placement with Shopee. There will also be a special prize of SGD500 (around RM1,520) for the top-ranked women’s team of both groups as the competition seeks to encourage diversity and inclusion of women in tech.
Apart from the competitions, Shopee and its training partners will hold a series of free training workshops starting 19 February 2021 onwards to upskill and facilitate knowledge sharing amongst participants.
