F-Secure SENSE clinches IoT Award

F-Secure SENSE took home the IoT Award at the inaugural Connected Britain Awards, organized by TotalTelecom in London. The secure router solution protects every device on a network and has been available to consumers for almost a year and is now available for gateways provided by Internet service providers through a software development kit (SDK).

“This category was hotly contested with a wide range of entries from a diverse group of companies,” Chris Kelly of TotalTelecom said. “By offering a solution that has made big strides in securing local networks for business and personal use, F-Secure pipped the competition to the post with its SENSE security solution.”

The Connected Britain Awards recognise companies that are helping to revolutionise Britain’s connectivity landscape. Other winners included The City of London, The City of Manchester and Cityverve and the Good Things Foundation.

“We’re proud that industry insiders see that SENSE is the future of IoT security,” said Tom Gaffney, Principal Security Consultant at F-Secure. “And that future is available now.”

While consumers are eager to connect more and more of their homes’ devices and appliances to the Internet, they sense the risks. 68% say they are increasingly worried about the security and privacy of their connected devices.

“There are strong solutions to protect mobile and desktop devices,” Gaffney said, “but the those solutions don’t scale to new connected devices, it needs a new solution to the problem like SENSE.”

Security is only an afterthought for most Internet of Things devices while privacy is almost completely ignored in favored of monetizing data. Despite the risks, the number of connected devices in customers’ homes will continue to explode, but consumers have no idea which devices are sufficiently secured or if they are secured at all.

“You can’t expect the average user to take proactive steps to protect their homes against the threats we all see coming if our solutions aren’t intuitive and simple,” Gaffney said. “Connected home security embedded either into the SENSE router or the Wifi routers provided to customers is solution everyone needs.”

SENSE protects personal devices, including phones, tablets, PCs and Macs that can run security software, as well as IoT devices like smart TVs, gaming consoles, smart locks and smart cameras that can’t.
